Can tokenization and other fintech initiatives help save the planet’s biodiversity?

Sustainable Digital Finance Alliance (SDFA) – a non-profit organisation with a high-level Advisory Board co-chaired by United Nations Environment Programme UNEP and Ant Financial Services Group – has launched its “Fintech for Biodiversity Challenge” to identify fintech companies across the globe with solutions to support the United Nations’ goals around biodiversity.

The purpose of conducting this challenge is to map all fintech companies and fintech projects working directly to support biodiversity and reward the most impactful of these with grants to support their work and to draw attention to what fintech initiatives can do to support this agenda.

SDFA is looking to map all fintech companies (both for-profit and not-for-profit) globally, which directly deliver impact toward the United Nations Sustainable Developments Goal 14 – life below water, or goal 15 – life on land. The challenge is open for fintechs big or small (profit-seeking or not) and regardless whether they are new startups or well-established companies or organisations. Participation is free of charge and only requires filling out the registration form on the challenge website.

For the fintechs that participate in the challenge, there will be a number of benefits:

  • Gain global exposure among other pioneers in the field of fintech and biodiversity
  • Deliver input to the policy recommendations that are part of the final report made in succession of the Fintech for Biodiversity Challenge
  • Have the chance to gain global recognition and win one of two grants worth USD 10,000 each

Deadline for signing up for a chance to win one of the grants is November 20, 2019. The winners of the challenge will be announced during the originally planned COP25 week in early December.
